Preface

On 6 February 2020, NWO welcomed nearly 300 researchers and stakeholders from the social sciences and humanities to its annual Synergy conference to marvel, listen, discuss, meet and share. The theme of the day was ‘Changing Societies’. Societies have always been, and still are, in a constant state of flux. Politically, economically, in terms of language and communication, and behaviourally. In culture, migration, (in)equality, law, and so on.

As diverse as they are, SSH disciplines help us understand changing societies and to produce insights that influence and change societies. The content of Synergy 2020 illustrates this perfectly. In this magazine, you will find a synthesising overview; one that, of course, can only provide a sketch of the entire day in which hundreds of participants shaped the content.

Synergy is the best place to discuss the position of SSH in the broader debate on how to value and nurture science.

This was Synergy 2020! We hope you enjoy this ‘digital throwback’ to this inspirational day and we want to thank all the speakers, organising parties, participants and crew. We look forward to seeing you all again at Synergy 2021 on 4th of February.
